Build a Bigger Blog in 24 Hours

September 2nd, 2007 by Spud Oregon

Inspired by Hoobin.com’s Screen Resolution Analysis, I decided to fatten up Nice4Rice with a third column. The original theme was designed for an 800×600 screen resoultion, but seeing that less than 4% of my visitors use that resolution, and those that do didn’t stay very long, it was time to tailor the site for 1024×768 users.

The extra width isn’t the only change however. Did you notice Spud Oregon’s new face? How about the new Advertising page?

In an attempt to speed up page loading times, I removed Nifty Corners Cube, the javascript I previously used for rounded corners, and replaced it with images of rounded corners. Also, and probably a bigger culprit of the slow loading was MyAvatars, the plugin used to show MyBlogLog avatars by comments. I’ve turned it off to see if things speed up.

If you still have a “thin” blog, then check your stats. It might be time for you to build a bigger blog, too!

Almost didn’t notice the third column, but I did see the new face. Will miss the old one.

MyAvatars seems to slow down post with more than 70-100 comments. I’m trying to manage this… Maybe it’s caused by the onload() call made on every avatar… ;)

Yeah, I particularly noticed it on my anti-Firefox post which is currently at 66 comments.

Wow, you are pretty fast. I’m still in the process of redesign my site and you are done already. Look good too me.

Looks good! I really like the 3-column layout on blogs. It helps to find things without having to scroll down the entire page. All the feedback I received was positive when I made the change from 2 to 3 columns, I’m sure you’ll have a similar response. :)

I’m typing this comment in Firefox and it all seems to be working okay - no strange fonts here. Is anyone else having the same problem as PreBlogging?

Now, you looks better than the old one. Yip, most of the readers today are using 1024ÁE??E68 screen resolution. Also using a 3 columns makes your blog more comfortable for the users and more space to add some of your widgets.

I love the new layout. I was debating whether or not to use a three column layout on my new blog.

Have you done any click tracking (CrazyEgg, etc) to see how the new column is affecting your clicks? I am thinking about widening my site but haven’t totally decided if I should do it yet.

Great layout, 3 columns is the best, plus you can add a lot more content in the new available space

I don’t know how you did all this quickly! I took NUTS of time to redesign my blog…However, I think a bunch of the people on the blog are experiencing some technical problem, I hope you can fix them quickly. Anyway, the new theme is wonderful and I really like it….Keep it up

I like the 3 column look of your site and might try it for my own blog. The colours are also really eye catching. Keep up the good work
