When I bought my latest PC with Windows Vista, I decided to keep my old Windows XP computer running alongside it. One of the reasons for this was I was using the Mozilla Thunderbird email client on my old machine and couldn’t be bothered to move it to the new one.
However, now that Windows Mail has an excellent spam filter, I figured there was no need to continue using Thunderbird. Windows Mail has a nicer interface and since it is in Vista, I can use speech recognition to write email!
The challenge then, was finding a way to import my email from Mozilla Thunderbird to Windows Mail. The first can’t export email in a format that the latter can understand, and Windows Mail can’t seem to import email from Thunderbird.
Searching for an answer on the web yielded few results, most being the reverse of what I was trying to do, but I did find one site with all the answers I needed.
Broobles.com has an excellent article on using a program called IMAPSize to convert Thunderbird email into a format recognizable by Outlook Express, and it works nicely with Windows Mail, too.
How to Move email from Thunderbird to Windows Mail with IMAPSize:
- Compact your Thunderbird folders
- Locate mbox files in Thunderbird
- Convert mbox files to eml files
- Import generated EML files into Windows Mail
Those are the steps, but I recommend you read Export Thunderbird to Outlook for the details. The whole process only takes a few minutes, or a good hour if you have thousands of e-mail stored in different folders, like me!
