A while back, Gary Lee wrote a great post on some of the more popular feed readers available. In his list, he included Bloglines and had this to say:
Bloglines - Probably the oldest RSS reader that’s going to be in this review, Bloglines has enjoyed a pretty good run of success in the past few years. The only problem is that it’s suffering from what a lot of successful companies suffer from - complacency! Until they realize that they need to innovate instead of spectate, Bloglines will continue to watch others pass them by.
With so many feed aggregators to choose from, I took him at his word and never looked back… until now.
I recently applied for pay-to-review service, ReviewMe, and was surprised that the email response to my application included this:
Considering Nice4Rice is over three months old and has half-decent rankings, I thought I’d have no problems getting approved. So, after requesting they take another look at this site, I went in search of possible reasons why I was rejected.
Kumiko suggested that the number of Nice4Rice readers using Bloglines might have been too low. At the time, I had 40 rss subscribers in total, but wanted to know how many of them were using Bloglines. That’s when I found Text Link Ad’s Blog Juice Calculator!

The Blog Juice Calculator is a better measurement of a blog’s popularity than Technorati or Alexa alone because it factors in both of those rankings along with the number of backlinks your site has, and the number of subscribers from Bloglines.
Each of these individual measurements of popularity are weighted to determine your site’s blog juice:
Bloglines: 40%
Technorati: 30%
Alexa: 15%
Links: 15%
Now, not forgetting that Text Link Ads and ReviewMe are operated by the same company, it’s quite possible that the reason I wasn’t accepted by ReviewMe is because of my non-existent Bloglines audience:

If it’s true that my lack of a Bloglines readership was the reason for ReviewMe’s rejection email, then it’s obvious that I need to do something about it. In fact, if it gains some steam, there’s every chance that Blog Juice will become one of the most reliable ways of determining a blog’s popularity, so shouldn’t we all be interested in boosting our Bloglines subscribers?
Contest: Win an empty carton of Japanese orange juice!
It doesn’t get juicier than this guys. All you have to do is subscribe to my feed with Bloglines and leave a comment on this post saying that you’ve subscribed.
In return, I promise to subscribe to your feed with Bloglines, and if Nice4Rice reaches 50 Bloglines subscribers, I will randomly select one of the comments and send its author an authentic but empty carton of Japanese orange juice. It’s empty because when I blog, I need juice. Get it?
Subscribe to the Nice4Rice rss feed:

If you don’t have a Bloglines acount, go and get one! It’ll take you just a few minutes, and then you’ll be ready to boost your own blog juice!

Hi Spud,
as I anyway read your feed with another reader, I switched it today to bloglines.
Wow, I am the first? So good luck with it!
ok, i’ve already subscribed to your rss feeds. cheers!
I created an account to get your feed and publish mine. Me too was at 0 from bloglines but was accepted for ReviewMe. Nice Tools btw
@Torsten, Augel, Steve’s Tech Blog
Thank you! I’ve bloglined all of you.
I’m opening a blog line account and will be adding you soon! Hope you get your review!
Yippee!
I just subscribed, my friend! AnitoKid at http://www.anitokid.blogspot.com
@dieselfire, AnitoKid
You’ve both been bloglined! Cheers.
eh… what are we supposed to do with an juice empty carton?
Maybe can recycle it, cut it open, put some soil and plant rice!
Spud,
You are probably more ‘righteous’ than ReviewMe and TLA put together. Bloglines may be the oldest, but it is definitely not the biggest. FeedBurner is certainly the BIGGEST!
The internet industry is a game of numbers, that is why Google went berserk and bought FeedBurner in the last few weeks.
ReviewMe has violated the fundamental law of the internet, which is NUMBERS. This is very odd, given that ReviewMe uses numerical indices to rate her bloggers for her advertisers.
I however concede that revenue from ReviewMe is about 4 times as much as Google AdSense, using John Chow as a base. But we would not all be John Chow, so ReviewMe should wake up and be more flexible, before being overtaken by the ever-dynamic growth of the internet.
I’m using Feedburner, and agree that if blog popularity was measured with Feedburner stats, it would be more accurate than using just Bloglines, but there are still so many people who don’t “burn their feeds”.
It would be nice to be listed in the ReviewMe marketplace, even if no-one ever bought a review, but when they have such high acceptance requirements, most bloggers are just going to turn to PPP Direct rather than wait for their blog to get accepted by ReviewMe.
It’s been six days since I requested they look at my site again, but no reply. My Blog Juice has jumped to 3.7 since I wrote this post, and is now showing 14 Bloglines subscribers. Thanks everyone!
@ Culture Shiok! and Philomena Ojikutu
I’ve subscribed to your blogs with Bloglines.
Spud,
I have become your 15th subscriber. Don’t worry, ReviewMe normally update database once a month. Let us expect that by the end of June you wld have hit the 50 bloglines subscriber target; and let us see if ReviewMe and even TLA recognition would come your way by then.
It took them seven months before they could recognize my blog back in May. They must have used other metrics, because I did not have a single Bloglines subscriber then, you are in fact, my first Bloglines subscriber, and that was a few hours ago.
Goodluck friend.
Thanks. Ironically, TLA approved me for text ads on the same day ReviewMe rejected me.
I’ve been reading your site through Bloglines for at least a month now (that’s what I used to read this post). I hope I still qualify for you to add me to your bloglines reader list.
Of course, Jason! You’ve just been bloglined.
Sweet! Thanks Spud.
Hi, the same reply was sent to me also by reviewmen I applied.
But I asked them to review my site manually, instead of the automated software, and within 6 hours I received their reply back that now my site has been approved.
Amazing.
Six hours? Lucky you! It’s been eight days here and they still haven’t replied. I’m not holding my breath.
Once I’ve written the minimum of 10 paid posts on my first blog then I’ll be able to use PayPerPost on this, my second blog. PPP Direct is a much better deal for advertisers anyway.

Or how about this … You just help me post The List … and I’ll help your bloglines number!
