Zaib Kaleem of Wireless Networks, spotted the Random Posts box at the top of the front page and emailed me to ask whether it was custom code or a plugin. Actually, like most of this site, I wrote the code straight into the theme, but he did inspire me to convert what I had done into a downloadable plugin that anyone could use.
Showing random posts is a great way to bring old articles out of the archive for all to see. They also offer something for your visitors to read when you haven’t updated your site in a while!
This plugin runs in a similar fashion to the Recent Posts plugin you can see in the sidebar. Just select how many posts you want to show and a list of random posts will be generated.
I can’t promise it will work for everyone, but here it is, the N4R Random Posts plugin for Wordpress!
View the ReadMe file - all the instructions are here.
Download random_posts.zip - ReadMe file included.
If you use this on your blog, please let me know about it!
Update: I found a Random Posts Widget on the Wordpress site that looks like it does the same thing - here.

Beautiful! I just installed and it works great. Thanks!
Phew! That’s great news, and it looks good, too!
Just added manual link to direct some “rice” your way. Thanks again!
Thanks Zaib, that’s a nice gesture.
Now this will be a crowd drawer!
Cheers!

i did it!
yay! i couldn’t figure it out at first, but i got it up and running!
Cheers Danielle. If you have any tips on how I can make the instructions clearer, let me know!
The related posts pluging does a great job of that too. I think your name for the plugin is better, Possibly Related, I like it.
woah! You truly share your wealth of experience.
Super excellent idea though it might not work on my full-of-rants blog!
Can you make one for Blogger? hehehe….

gee… sure looks promising, Spud. I think I’ll try it on my blog. If I come to like it, I’ll shoot you a message. This is your own code? Rice work! Err.. I mean ‘nice work!’
hi! I have been able to put up your helpful plugin on my site. Once again, another rice for Spud’s hard work!
Great! Thanks for letting me know.
Anyone can help me? Why it shows “none found” in my blog? I just have 9 posts right now.
That’s strange. The “None Found” message appears when it can’t find any published posts, i.e. drafts and pages don’t count.
Even with only 9 posts, it should still work. How many posts do you want it to show? And what’s your URL?
I’ve been using type of permalink like this : http://www.mysite.com/my-post-title/
before: http://www.mysite.com/2007/05/21/my-post-title/
I’ve removed /2007/05/21
is there anything wrong with this type of permalink?
The permalink makes no difference because Wordpress is counting the posts and pulling them from the database. Use the contact form to email me your url, how many posts you want to show, and the function call you are using.
[…] installed some new wordpress plugins in my blog. These plugins are Adsense deluxe, Buy me a beer, Random Posts plugin, SRG Clean Archives and Sidebar Widgets. All these 5 plugins have added different functionalities […]
The “None Found” problem is probably due to using this plugin in a version of WordPress older than 2.1. Older versions only marked posts with a post_status of “publish” and the post_type field was always left empty. Removing “AND post_type = ‘post’” from the two query strings will make it work in older versions. I tested this on 2.0.5 and it worked great… and it was yet another reminder that I need to upgrade! Thanks for the plugin!
Good thinking, lipskin! I bet that’s the problem. The plugin looks great on your site. Thanks for using it!
Thanks lipskin! The plugin is working now!

Hi there, thanks for the plug in! I’m using it at Strenge Jacke!. I modified it by myself, perhaps it’s an option for you as well: I chose to let only postings from a certain category be displayed. Maybe you could change your plug in in a way that there’s another parameter which allows choosing all/one/variuous numbers of categories?
Thank you very much for this plugin. Works great!
Great plugin… I experienced the same as everyone else, a smooth install no headaches, great!
Me too! This plugin is fantastic and easy to install. Thank you, N4R.com!
