After my post about Technorati giving the same ranking to blogs with an equal number of unique backlinks, Danielle asked whether the number of “favorites” affects a blog’s ranking.
Technorati allows users to “favorite” a blog, a feature which could be used to determine a blog’s popularity and therefore increase its ranking.
Unfortunately, as shown in the example below, the number of people who have “favorited” a blog appears to have no influence on a blog’s ranking at all.

This won’t deter me from jumping on the Technorati Favorites Train, originally started by Gary Lee, in an effort to get more unique backlinks and rise up the rankings. Zaib Kaleem, who I’d like to thank for sponsoring Nice4Rice with his Wireless Networks ad, sent the Technorati train my way.
The sites I’m adding to the list are current Top Rice Earner, Culture Shiok!, and Top Rice Giver, FruityOaty. My third choice is the little known Michael McKinlay, whose Super Happy Fun Comedy Corner keeps me coming back for more!

The number of favorites may not change your ranking, but the number of links on the train definitely does! I’ve gone up over 200,000 spots since this train began.
Good luck, and thanks for keeping the train going!
200K?! Wow, that’s incredible! It is a shame though that Technorati doesn’t use the number of favorites in its rankings. Maybe it would be too easy to abuse.
Hey Nick,
Thank you very much for another train branch!
Welcome Aboard Spud! CHOO CHOO!!!!
The real train is the number of links you’ll get from people who will repost the train. Pretty much on the number of blogs that link to you matters in Technorati ranking.
Thanks Spud!
Surely the train will take us all somewhere…
The number of people that favorite you can put you in the Top 100 page like Gary. That should do something for traffic.
Actually, I didn’t realize that Technorati had a top 100 list for most favorited sites. So, there is merit in favoriting after all!
