I was talking to Kevin at Quartz Mountain Communications about the dismal performance of the ads on this site. According to Kevin, most of the ads are related to recipes, no doubt due to the name of this blog. Because I live in Japan, I actually get “make money online” ads showing up here so I was unaware of what visitors from North America and elsewhere were seeing.
Kevin kindly directed me to JohnTP.com, the blog of a young IT graduate who has been blogging full-time since late 2005.
Of many posts about technology and blogging, John wrote a good article on section targeting - telling Google Adsense which parts of your site to focus on, and which to ignore, ultimately helping you display more relevant adsense ads.
I had read about section targeting before, but since I thought I was already getting relevant ads, I didn’t bother to implement it. Pretty dumb, eh?
Now I’m one of over a thousand subscribers to JohnTP.com and I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. I’ll be starting with John’s article, 13 tips to get your blog noticed.
I’ve implemented section targeting now, so I’d love to get some feedback on what ads you guys are seeing here. Also, if you’ve added section targeting to your blog, how did it affect your click through rate?

Section targetting is where it’s at. I spent some time tracking that down when I did an off-topic post and the ads started going way off-base. Every blogger that’s monetizing should know how to target.
